Helping children realize how important reading is outside the educational process is VS Grenier's number one goal. She's joined the battle with Musing Our Children to help students develop a love for reading and writing. They believe that each one of us is unique, bringing creativity and point of view to the world around us.
READING & WRITING APPRECIATION WEEK IS DURING NOVEMBER 3-7, 2008!
Presentation and Workshop Information:
VS Grenier Author/Editor Power Point Presentation~
I’ll introduce who I am, talk about how I became a children's writer, why I choose to write for children, and about how you can live your dreams. This fast-paced, interactive fun presentation is full of humor and stories to help break-up all the information about writing. Approx Time: 45 - 60 minutes. (Note: I will need a laptop hooked up to a projector, a microphone, and a dark room full of kids.)
Basics in Writing Workshop~
In this workshop, I discuss with children the three key points of a story—the beginning, middle, and climax/ending, how I outline the ideas to my stories and put them into these three key points. I will have the children do one or two small writing exercises either as a group or individually.
Creating Characters Workshop~
This fun technique driven workshop shows children how you use the world around you to create characters—from family members, teachers, friends, and people you are just passing by. The children will do two different character exercises—the first by observing those around them in the room; the second by using a story line I’ll provide.
Entertaining Non Fiction Workshop~
Students hate writing reports, but what if there was a way to make writing that report fun and interesting? In this workshop, I teach children how to write entertaining non fiction instead of a boring old report. I show them how to hook their readers into the information, drawing them into what is being said and going on. Learning can be fun. You just have to find the fun in it.
Creating Scenes Workshop~
Designed to help teach children the art of description, this workshop uses the five senses—touch, smell, sight, hearing, and taste. Each child will write about something in the past using only the five senses to bring detail to the scene of the event. At the end of the exercise, I have some of the children read what they have written to the group.
Brainstorming Plots/Story Lines Workshop~
This is a fun group workshop. I share with the children the different techniques I use to come up with story ideas. Then as a group we’ll do two to three different idea starters that may lead to a group short story. This short story will be published in my Ezine, Stories for Children Magazine, and each student will get a copy.
Becoming A Writer Workshop~
I’ll walk students through the process of becoming a published writer. I’ll show them a rough draft of my work, talk about how I submit work to publishers, how I accept submissions as an editor, and places where children who want to be a writer can submit their own writing for publication.
Tips to Becoming a Better Reader Workshop~
Becoming a better reader is easier said then done. It takes lots of work and support. During this workshop, I do fun activities with the children using some of my favorite books. I teach them games they can play with their friends while reading their favorite books or with their parents during storytime.
Journaling/Book Club Workshop~
My goal in this workshop is to teach children there are many different and funs ways to read and write. During the journaling part of this workshop, I show them how they can create journals for just about anything, from nature to rock collections. During the book club portion, I show them how to set up a club with those who like to read the same types of books. I’ll also go over games and activities they can do as a group with their favorite stories and writing their thoughts down on selected books read.
Author Day (For Libraries ONLY) ~
For these presentations to be successful, you should have: a room that can be as dark as possible, a laptop hooked up to a projector, a good screen, or white wall to project onto, an extension cord (The best place for the projector might not be near an outlet.), good publicity, Lots of kids ready for fun. (The best presentations are during your normal storytime hours.)
Note: If you don’t have a projector, or the room's too light, I’ll do it the old-fashioned way—reading from the magazine. (Power Point is just a lot easier for a large group of kids to see.)
